My golf

Seven-point-one and still chasing it.

I play off a handicap of 7.1. These are the courses I love, and why.

Favourite in Australia

Brookwater Golf Club

Incredibly hard, and equally beautiful. I played it when I was around a 15 handicap. I stood on the first tee and looked down a gorgeous but terrifying fairway with fog sitting in the middle of it. I turned around, walked straight into the pro shop and bought a pack of twelve golf balls.

I honestly can’t remember whether I had any left at the end of the round. I loved every bit of it.

Favourite to show visitors

The Coast Golf Club

I don’t have a clear favourite in Sydney, but I love taking people who aren’t from here to The Coast. The course is decent, the greens and fairways are in good condition and the wind can be brutal, but the views are why I take people.

Hole 4 is a par 3 where you hit over a cove. My favourite is Hole 14 from the Black tees: a 20 metre drop and a 100 metre carry to a fairway with a cliff and the Pacific Ocean on the left, and a very hard second shot on the right. Be brave and you’ll be rewarded. Miss, and you might be in the ocean.

The green hovers over Little Bay, so even if you miss the birdie putt you still get an incredible view.

Most nostalgic

The old Chatswood Golf Course

When I first moved to Sydney I played a few times a week in the afternoons, often just nine holes. It was the first time in my life I played consistently, thanks to good weather and having the time.

The course has since been redesigned and is now called New Greens. I’m yet to play it, but I should do that soon.

What I’m working on

Coming back from a foot injury.

I’m returning from a bad injury to my left foot. It hasn’t been easy, and it’s still a work in progress.

The work has been tissue healing, proper rehab, balance and strength, and in particular strength through the weight shift. Stability as I transfer weight over my left foot in the swing is what I’m focused on most.

It gives me a first-hand view of what my golfers go through when they come back from injury.

Why it matters

Playing keeps me close to the game my golfers love.

Everything I do is built around keeping golfers playing, for as many years as possible. Next, see how I train for it.
